The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), signed into law by President Barack Obama in January 2011, represents major changes in food safety oversight. It requires the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop science-based preventive controls throughout the food industry. This is a marked change from the FDA’s previous functions that were mostly reactive; e.g. to respond to incidents of
